I, I expect you have heard that we met Mr. Hsu of
the Jardine Engineering Corporation on 12th August to discuss the claims against the War Office for requisitioned railway materials. He took note of the reasons which have led us to reduce our estimate of our liability to £185,000, and is to consult his firm.
2. During the course of the meeting, he mentioned the much larger claim of £915,449 which is said to be detailed on the firm's invoices 009 and 010 of 29th July, 1946, and he has later written to say how distressed he is that neither we nor your office appear to have received copies of the claims, which were presented to the Hong Kong Government. He has therefore sent along the attached copies of correspondence and the invoices. It seems that the War Office is not concerned with these claims and I sincerely trust we never shall be but I thought you might be interested to see them.
